Preparing for an HSE inspection
Preparing for HSE inspections in 2021
The HSE has announced recently that after making significant changes to requirements when dealing with mild steel weld fumes in 2019 it is going to begin workplace inspections this year.
In February 2019 the HSE announced tougher requirements on weld fume management, this change impacted mild steel welders in particular, removing the notion of safe operation times.
The HSE found that any work involving mild steel welding was hazardous to health and simple ventilation such as an open window or door was not enough to mitigate risks to the welder or to those around them. The HSE also announced at the time that inspections would take place to ensure that weld shops had sufficient LEV in place to protect welders and anyone near by.
The Global Pandemic halted the inspections with very few if any taking place during 2020, however, as Covid-19 looks increasingly to be brought under control the HSE has announced that inspections will take place in 2021, with a plan to commence from May.
As communicated by the HSE recently
"Inspectors will be out visiting fabricated metal businesses across GB between May and September 2021 to ensure duty holders know the risks, plan their work and have adequate control measures in place to protect workers’ health."
Many businesses will have already implemented measures to manage welding fume since the update in 2019, however, the necessary measures may still present a concern to some.
