Dust Extraction and Industrial Housekeeping

Many industrial processes generate contamination to the air or in the facilities in form of dust and particles. Airborne dust and fine particles can be hazardous to the human health, and it´s important to make sure they are extracted at the source before it reaches the breathing zone. If having dust and particles spread in the facilities proper housekeeping equipment is needed.

Dust and particles are generated in many different ways. Typical sources are dust from cutting, grinding, sanding, handling of powders in food, and pharmaceutical industries. Textile, wood and composite working may also release dust and fibers that are harmful to human lungs and can cause allergic reactions or even worse by penetrating the skin.

There are at least four important types of solutions for handling dust and particles:

  • extraction arms
  • on-tool extraction
  • cleaning applications
  • general air purification

In addition to dust and particles that is hazardous to the human health they can also create explosions. Read more about combustible dust and how to avoid it.

Extraction arms

Extraction arms are especially suitable for light airborne dust and fumes and cover a wide variety of applications. A typical application is when handling different types of powders or fumes. Welding applications, bakeries, laboratories are some of many examples where arms are a good solution. The advantage with arms are that they are fully flexible in all directions and easy to position, thus covering a large working area and/or serve several working stations. The arms are connected to a fan and dust extraction system removing the contaminants from the extracted air so that it can be returned to the atmosphere or recycled without negative effects.

Nederman offers a wide range of arms in different designs, arm lengths, hose diameters and various hood designs. Different attachments are available for wall, ceiling or extension bracket mounting as well as a number of accessories, including hoods and dampers to improve efficiency. On-tool Dust Extraction

For applications like cutting, grinding and sanding, on-tool extraction is the most efficient way to capture dust and particles. The dust is extracted at high speed directly from the tool, thus avoiding extracting large air volumes and above all the pollutant is not spread around in the room. On-tool solutions are also flexible, allowing the operators to work over larger areas.

Nederman offers a wide range of on-tool dust extraction kits (Attachment kit) for more several hundred of tools used for cutting, grinding, sanding etc available on our website. Attachment kits are available for both electric and pneumatic tools.

Cleaning applications

Dust spread easily in industrial facilities. While far from all of them are outright hazardous, they are not exactly healthy or desired either. Some dust is even combustible. Taking care of the actual dust or waste is usually not difficult and the overall tendency is clear: Industrial housekeeping is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon, which also ties in with a general, global development where industries and facilities are becoming safer and more sustainable. The solutions Nederman offer range from compact equipment like small industrial vacuum cleaners – to greater, stationary dust extraction systems with specific maintenance accessories. Read more about Industrial Housekeeping.

General air purification

Air purification solutions can be a complement to at the source extraction and will keep the background concentration of welding fumes and other particles as low as possible. With the Nederman air purification tower solution is the perfect complement or choice if source extraction is not a satisfying option where ducting cannot be installed, welding on large objects, in tight spaces or when capture at source is not practical.

Combustible dust

Wood dust is one of the most common combustible dusts that Nederman routinely provides industrial dust extraction solutions for. Dust collectors do not only need to efficiently remove and filter dust, the entire system must be designed correctly to meet ATEX and NFPA standards, to protect your workers and facility. To learn more about these hazards, see combustible dust handling
