Dust Collection In Woodworking Industries

Industrial Dust Collection

Many industrial processes generate dust, and particles contaminate the air or facilities. Airborne dust and fine particles can be hazardous to human health, and it's important to ensure they are extracted at the source before reaching the breathing zone. In addition, if dust and particles spread in the facilities, proper housekeeping equipment is needed.

Dust and particles are created in many different ways. Typical woodworking sources involve large amounts of sawdust and sanding dust from cutting, grinding and sanding. Woodworking may release dust and fibres that are harmful to human lungs and can cause allergic reactions or even worse by penetrating the skin.

There are at least four important types of solutions for handling dust and particles:

  • extraction arms
  • on-tool extraction
  • cleaning applications
  • general air purification

As well as being hazardous to human health, dust and fume particles can also create explosions. Read more about combustible dust and how to avoid it.

To handle these large flows of wood waste safely and efficiently, Nederman has developed a wide range of products and systems based on dust collection systems, filtration solutions, extraction arms, piping/ducting, fans, conveyors, silos, and automated control systems. These systems allow customers to recycle wood waste, representing a large economic value. When converted into pellets, waste products can be used for energy production or sold as an energy source.

Extraction Arms

Extraction arms are especially suitable for light airborne dust and fumes and cover various applications. A typical application is when handling different types of powders or fumes. Welding applications, bakeries, laboratories are examples of arms being a good solution. The advantage of extraction arms is that they are fully flexible in all directions and easy to position, thus covering a large working area and serving several working stations. The extraction arms are connected to a fan and dust collector system removing the contaminants from the extracted air so that it can be returned to the atmosphere or recycled without negative effects.

Nederman offers a wide range of extraction arms in different designs, arm lengths, hose diameters and various hood designs. Different attachments are also available for wall, ceiling or extension bracket mounting, as well as several accessories, including hoods and dampers, to improve efficiency. Visit our product page to see the range of products and the welding fume extraction page to read more about this.

On-tool Extraction

For applications like cutting, grinding and sanding, on-tool extraction is the most efficient way to capture dust and particles. The dust is extracted directly from the tool at high speed, thus avoiding extracting large air volumes, and above all, the pollutant is not spread around in the room. On-tool solutions are also flexible, allowing the operators to work over larger areas.

Nederman offers a wide range of on-tool extraction kits for several hundred tools used for cutting, grinding and sanding, available on our website. In addition, extraction (attachment) kits are available for both electric and pneumatic tools.

Cleaning applications

Dust spreads easily in industrial facilities. While far from all of them are outright hazardous, they are not exactly healthy or desired either. Some dust is even combustible. Nevertheless, taking care of the dust or waste is usually not difficult. The overall tendency is clear; Industrial housekeeping is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon, which also ties in with a general, global development where industries and facilities are becoming safer and sustainable. The solutions Nederman offer range from compact equipment like small industrial vacuum cleaners – to greater, stationary systems with specific maintenance accessories. Read more about Industrial Housekeeping.

General air purification

Air purification solutions can complement the source extraction and keep the background concentration of welding fumes and other particles as low as possible. The Nederman air purification tower solution is the perfect complement or choice if source extraction is not a good option when ducting cannot be installed, welding on large objects, in tight spaces or when capture at source is not practical.

Combustible dust

Wood dust is one of the most common combustible dusts that Nederman routinely provides industrial dust collection solutions for. However, dust collectors do not only need to remove and filter dust efficiently, but the entire system must also be designed correctly to meet ATEX and NFPA standards to protect your workers and facility. To learn more about these hazards, see combustible dust handling
